One egg, two yolks

My scrambled eggs this morning were extra yellow thanks to the twin yolks from this single egg. First time I've seen that.

Apparently it occurs in roughly 1 in 1,000 eggs. Here is the dual-core oeuf…

One egg, two yolks

2 hours later…

As if that was not odd enough, we just had another double yolk in from 1 egg. They both came from the same box of 6 eggs from Tesco (free range organic). Can anyone explain this?

    Hiya Jake! 🙂

I know of 2 poultry shops in Johor Bahru that actually sell double-yolk eggs (in trays, mind you)! Apparently, there’s a huge demand for these eggs, especially amongst people who bake (enhances the flavour/texture apparently) & of course, those who just wish to increase their cholestrol level! ;P

The eggs are a bit pricey though, ranging from between RM0.50 to RM1.00 per egg, depending on the grade.Must bring both you and Sophia there the next time you guys are down!

    Hey Gulnaz!

That’s bizarre. How the heck do they breed eggs with two yolks? Or do they use a machine to scan inside the eggs and pick out the one-in-a-thousand with 2 yolks? We need to investigate…

I’ve got two double yolk eggs this morning too, and it came in the same box. I don’t know if i’m going to find other one because they was in a 12 eggs box.

I had the same thing tonight! I cracked open one egg… and was showing it to my daughter when I cracked open a second one into the same pan and it was also a double yolk! It also came from a 12 egg box, so I am now curious as to whether or not any more will be in it!. I’d never seen this before even though I’d heard about it.

i purchased 15 eggs from a little country store down the road and every egg so far has had 2 yolks in them. i must add that these eggs are “huge”…when i got home i thought i might have purchased turkey eggs or maybe even ostrig eggs? these suckers are like “a-rod” eggs (eggs on steriods). have to say that the workout at the gym was ironman feeling too. I am a believer that these are freek. Nice talkin to y’all.

Hi peeps. I fancied some egg on toast with spagetti, cracked the shell and out popped a double yolk. It freaked me out so much, I had to remove the yolks completely. Now, I can only fried egg white! If its in a cake though, thats fine 🙂

    David…

According to this site, Double Yolkers appear when ovulation occurs too rapidly, or when one yolk somehow gets “lost” and is joined by the next yolk. Double yolkers may be by a pullet (young female hens) whose productive cycle is not yet well synchronized.

Double Yolkers are occasionally laid by a heavy-breed hen, often as an inherited trait.

I just had 12 double yolks from a box of 12 breakfast eggs from Aldi I cooked the first 6 not thinking it was that rare, then googled and then filmed the last 6 as I did not realise how unlikely this was and my partner did not belive me!!!!

  20. Ricky G

this is weird!! I had 3 eggs this week with 2 yolks but get this, 1 of the 3 came from a different box, brought at a different store, not cage free or anything!! This seems to be happening more often than that. HHHHHMMMMMMMM??

anyone know what causes this and is it safe? I know it should be but nowadays….who knows!!

  21. sarah

They do breed the hens now that constantly produce the double yolks, which is why you are getting them from the same batch as they are coming from a particular laying strain or farm.

  22. brimarie

we had 11 doubles out of a box of 12 eggs!!! it was very strange!!!

  23. Jo

double yolk in 1 egg its like WTF is happening here. They breed the double yolk’ers! LOL salt lake city

  24. erin

Bought Eggland’s Best Vegetarian Fed Hen eggs…. I’ve eaten 8 of the 12 so far…. ALL double yolk. I’m a vegetarian, but even this weirds me out a little. I mean, they TASTE delicious, but I’m not sure what has caused it.

  25. dorothy

I just had my first twin egg yolk this morning! Tasted the same in my scrambled egg, but HEY! It was an exciting find!

Two yolks are going to be common reason ?? Simple farmers are going to be using more steroids. One hen one egg every day sometimes two eggs. It was1 in 1000 now 45%
